Ability

Each night, you learn how many players' abilities worked abnormally (since dawn) due to another character's ability.

Night Ritual (Storyteller Instructions)

Each Night

"Show the hand signal for the number (0, 1, 2, etc.) of players whose ability malfunctioned due to other abilities."

Strategy Guide

Playing As

  • Act as the town's 'editor' by collecting public claims and seeing if they fit the narrative provided by your numbers.
  • A '0' is powerful information, confirming that players likely received true info and that no droisoning (like a No Dashii) is currently interfering.
  • Track changes in your number from night to night; an increase can signal a Sweetheart death, a Philosopher acting, or a Vigormortis killing a Minion.
  • Share your information publicly; your data is useless in a vacuum and requires the context of other players' actions to solve the puzzle.
  • In a Vortox game, you will receive false information, but consistent '0's when chaos is occurring can still help diagnose the Demon type.

Playing Against

  • Bluffing as the Mathematician is generally safe and low-profile; keep your claimed numbers low (0 or 1) to appear legitimate.
  • If a No Dashii is in play, the Mathematician is a high-priority kill as they can triangulate the Demon's location based on neighbor malfunctions.
  • As a Minion, you can claim high numbers to simulate a Vortox game or create panic about widespread poisoning.
  • Coordinate with your team to create false 'malfunctions' (e.g., claiming to be drunk) that confuse the Mathematician's true count.
